SVOD (Subscription Video On Demand)

What is SVOD?

SVOD, short for Subscription Video On Demand, is a service model for Video On Demand (VOD) where viewers pay a subscription fee to access a library of video content.

What are examples of SVOD platforms?

Examples of popular SVOD services include Netflix, Hulu, and Disney+. Each of these services offers multiple plans at different price points, including plans that are supported by ads in addition to a subscription fee.

Another popular SVOD service is Amazon Prime Video. Users can stream most of its content as part of their subscription, but some titles are not included and users must pay an additional fee to stream them.

How is SVOD different from AVOD?

AVOD (Advertising Video On Demand) offers a similar catalog of content to viewers. However, instead of charging viewers for subscriptions, AVOD platforms earn revenue by charging advertisers to show ads to their audience.

Some SVOD services offer plans at reduced rates that are supported by ads. For example, Netflix offers multiple subscription options, including an ad-free plan and a lower-price plan where ads are shown during or after video content.
